I've got a secret to tell you. The best latte I've ever had doesn't include espresso. I guess maybe that doesn't make it a latte BUT there is steamed milk in it so it counts. And Starbucks calls it a latte so I have no choice but to believe it is. So here is another secret. The drink I'm talking about is a london fog latte. It seems like no one I know has heard of this drink so I feel like I am letting people in on the best kept secret. Anytime someone comes over to my house, day or night, I have to ask, "can I make you a latte?"
I've been obsessed with this drink for almost a year now. I've always been a huge coffee lover but I haven't had coffee in close to 4 months. Partly due to an ulcer (eye roll) but mostly due to this drink. My cousin Erin turned me on to it last summer when she placed her Starbucks order. I never even knew this drink existed. My go to was always a caramel macchiato or any type of latte but I had never stumbled across this one before. Probably because the main source of caffeine is black tea.
At my previous apartment there was a Starbucks right across the street from me. Almost every morning before work I would place an order on my Starbucks app right before I was about to leave and then drive over, waltz in, and pick up a grande london fog latte & stuffed bagel bites. Quick pause since we are talking about my obsession with this latte. I am equally obsessed with the Bantam Bagel bites Starbucks sells. My favorite is the everything bagel stuffed with vegetable cream cheese. For awhile I was convinced I ate all of my Starbucks inventory as they were out for over a week. Desperate times means I had to place my own order online and quickly ordered $40 worth of bagel bites... Moving on!
So it wasn't until recently that it dawned on me to stop giving Starbucks all my money and figure out if I can make this latte at home. I mean really it couldn't be that hard right? Luckily I was right and it's probably one of the easiest recipes I could find. It also doesn't take long which is important as I've been making this drink every morning before I leave for work and I need it to be quick. Check out the recipe below and let me know if you try it!
1 Earl Grey tea bag (I use the brand Tazo)
3/4 cup 2%milk - steamed
2 tablespoons of vanilla syrup (do not use vanilla extract. apparently this has a high alcohol content which was news to me)
So basically all you need to do is prepare your tea bag like you normally would. Let that steep for 5 minutes (this is the part where I brush my teeth in the morning). As it is steeping, add in your vanilla syrup and stir. Then you need to warm your milk in the microwave for 55 seconds. I know this time is pretty specific but I've done less and more and found that 55 is the perfect amount. Some recipes I found called for frothed milk which I initially was doing but the only benefit was that it looked prettier and quite honestly it just took more time in the morning. All that is left is to add in your milk and you are all set.
Start your weekend off right with making one of these bad boys. I promise you won't regret it. Enjoy!
